Chinese-owned construction companies, labour-hire companies, salaries of civil servants and the country’s land reform process are some of the challenges that remain a “thorn in the flesh” of workers in the country. National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) president Elias Manga said while workers value and appreciate the historical link between Namibia and China, the union strongly feels that the abuse endured by its members at the hands of some Chinese business people in general, and those in the construction industry in particular, must be stopped...The NUNW president said that most Chinese construction companies do not comply with the minimum wage and conditions of service as agreed upon between the industry and the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union.
