Colombia: Peasant farmers' conflict over environmental damage and non-compliance against oil company Emerald Energy overturned

After bloody events in which a peasant farmer was shot dead, a policeman was stabbed to death and numerous people were injured, the government and the oil company Emerald Energy reached an agreement. The protests concerned environmental remediation and road paving in the municipalities of influence of the company. Sources from the Colombian Petroleum Association (ACP), citing Emerald Energy executives, reportedly stated that the company would cancel its contract, but this has not been publicly confirmed. While the authorities carry out investigations, the peasants of the Caquetá region are waiting for the fulfilment of the commitments, after 43 days of protests.
