Firm responsibility for companies [So. Africa]

Deloitte chairwoman Futhi Mtoba is a woman with a huge challenge on her hands. Recently appointed by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the board of the UN Global Compact on corporate citizenship, she believes the increase in companies’ efforts to show their credentials on social responsibility “does not go far enough”...One of Mtoba’s main challenges is to create awareness among South African companies about the compact. Currently there are only 18 local participants. The first to sign up was Eskom; other major organisations include Anglogold Ashanti, Nedbank, Barloworld, Tshwane, First Rand, Sasol and Rand Water. Mtoba intends to “scale-up” micro issues such as human rights and environmental matters so that they carry more weight...More than 3320 companies, including Volkswagen, Nokia, Nike and Hewlett-Packard, in more than 90 countries currently participate [in the Global Compact].
