Greenland: Left-wing party opposed to rare earth Kvanefjeld mining project wins election

Greenland’s main opposition party, Inuit Ataqatigiit, which campaigned heavily against an Australian company’s mining project involving uranium and other metals on the Arctic island, has emerged as the election's winner with more than a third of votes in the snap parliamentary election of April 6, 2021.

The result of the election raises doubts regarding the mining complex at Kvanefjeld in the south of the Arctic island, as many international mining companies are looking to exploit the area for rare earth materials. The Kvanefjeld mine has been a point of contention for many years, raising concerns over adverse impacts to the environment and indigenous populations.
