Brazil: Investigation reveals illegal sale of protected Amazon land on Facebook Marketplace

GETTY IMAGES

In February 2021, a BBC investigation found large areas of protected and Indigenous land in the Amazon rainforest are being sold on Facebook Marketplace.

Facebook said it was "ready to work with local authorities", but indicated it would not take independent action of its own to halt the trade, adding, "our commerce policies require buyers and sellers to comply with laws and regulations."

Brazil's Supreme Federal Court subsequently ordered an inquiry into the sales, asking the government to "take the appropriate civil and criminal measures".

In April, a Greenpeace petition asking Facebook to ban all illegal sales of public & protected Amazon land on its platform topped 100,000 signatories.

We invited Facebook to respond to the concerns raised in the investigation and Greenpeace's petition; Facebook declined to comment.
