Local communities have reported that over 35,000 families in Kiryandongo have been forcibly evicted from their land since 2019. The forceful evictions are being carried out by three multinational companies namely; Agilis Partners, Great Season and Kiryandongo Sugar Limited without court actions. On 30 June 2020, it is reported that seven lawyers and human rights defenders were arrested while they were preparing to close their submission for the hearing on the cases of evictions. The lawyers arrested include Kaijuka Aaron, Christine Marunga, Joan Balyerali, Brian Tuwayenga, Eric Bajole, Muhindo Morgan and Nafula Elizabeth. They were reportedly detained following orders from the Kiryandongo District Police Commander Bakaleke Joseph with close supervision of the Agilis Manager on the charge of “disobeying lawful orders” and “negligent acts likely to spread infection of diseases”. They were released on bail on 2 July, 2020.
