Niger is first country to ratify new ILO protocol on modern slavery

Niger has ratified the 2014 Protocol to the 1930 ILO Forced Labour Convention, as part of a renewed global effort to eradicate modern slavery. The Protocol, a legally binding instrument, brings the existing convention into the modern era, with new provisions on prevention, protection and victims’ access to remedies... Niger has become the first country to ratify the Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention , giving new impetus to the global fight...[A] survey conducted in 2008 by the national Statistics Institute of Niger and the ILO found that more than 59,000 adults and children...are victims of forced labour...
