The Nigerian government has taken Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, claiming, on behalf of oil spills affected communities, 1.3 trillion Nigerian Naira [about US$6.4 billion] against the oil firm for the December 20, 2011, Bonga oil spills. Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria has commended the federal government for taking this step and pledged to support the case and provide technical support that will ensure justice is done for communities whose livelihoods were destroyed by the oil spill.
