Peru: Las Bambas workers go on hunger strike after clashes with local villagers protesting against copper extraction

FNTMMSP

The conflict at MMG's Las Bambas mining company has taken on new characteristics, as tensions mount over the massive influx of dozens of members of communities affected by the loss of water and destruction of their livelihoods due to air and soil pollution caused by the Chinese mining company. Workers argue that without guarantees for their work, on which their families depend, local populations would disappear. The communities, however, maintain their decision to remain at the installations to press for the suspension of mining operations, and the government has so far failed to provide solutions; on the contrary, community members have suffered violent police repression, which they believe has prevented dialogue.
