Philippines: Outrage over ethanol plant

During a Jan. 29 public hearing…two elderly women of the Higaonon tribe hold a sign saying the tribe is against a…bioethanol plant proposed for…the barangay [Bayanga]…[C]ivil society groups…are…opposing the plant’s location because it will destroy the barangay's fragile environment and affect...the health of all Cagayanons…Alsons Consolidated Resources Inc. (ACR), which plans to build the plant….will…take water from the Munigi River, the sole source of potable water for the two villages...ACR project engineer Gerome Magkasig responded that the company is using sun-dried cassava chips that contain none of the toxic substance…ACR officials maintained the plant would create jobs, but some participants argued that residents in the two villages are unskilled and not likely to get technical jobs…
