Development of the renewable energy sector in Central Asia is uneven.

China’s arrival in the past decade as an investor in the region’s renewable energy sector has been welcomed mostly by Kazakhstan, which has the region’s largest renewable capacity in solar and wind.

This paper details the number of renewable investments China has undertaken in Central Asia across hydro, solar, and wind, while highlighting how these projects are entangled in regional politics. It also looks at how international standards apply to project implementation.

The paper ends with policy recommendations for Central Asian policymakers.
