Spain: CSOs launch campaign calling for human rights & environmental due diligence legislation

Plataforma por Empresas Responsables is a group of Spanish civil society organisations that joined efforts to achieve the adoption of a binding human rights and environmental due diligence law in Spain.

Today, companies operate all over the world, developing their activities and marketing their products beyond their national borders.

This global activity, together with complex corporate structures and the absence of legal standards in many countries, has caused, on too many occasions, bad business practices that only benefit companies, avoiding their responsibility for the damages caused.

The European Commission is already working on a directive that holds companies accountable for their impacts on people and the planet. Also, several countries in the region have already passed legislation in this regard, such as France, Germany and Norway, and others are in open political processes, such as the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium or Luxembourg.

In Spain , we want our companies to be responsible, so it is urgent to pass a human rights and environmental due diligence law that establishes clear, solid and enforceable requirements for Spanish companies and foreign companies operating in Spain . A law that:

  • Requires companies  to prevent, mitigate and remedy human and environmental rights violations that they have directly caused or have contributed to as a result of their activities.
  • Guarantees access to justice for the victims of abuse...
