"P&O Ferries respond to claims staff working on Hull ships are paid like 'slaves'", 13 June 2019

P&O Ferries is adamant it pays its foreign staff “fair rates” after a Hull MP condemned the company for subjecting chefs on board ships sailing from Hull to “slave labour”.

Hull East MP Karl Turner claimed in the House of Commons that Lithuanian cooks working on board ferries from Hull to Zeebrugge are receiving a wage of just 2.40 Euros an hour...

A spokesman for P&O Ferries said: "We comply fully with International Transport Federation agreements, which we have voluntarily put in place on our North Sea ships.

“We are one of the largest single employers of UK seafarers and also have many agency colleagues from other countries working for us. The majority have no interaction with the British economy as they live on board on an 'all found' basis during their tour of duty.

“They tend to be long-serving, some having been with us for many years, and are employed at fair rates of pay when compared to wage levels in their home countries.
