Workplace Intolerance Rises for Muslims After Sept. 11

Since Sept 11, 2001, life for a consultant in the customer-sales and services department at a well-known U.S. telecommunications firm in Maryland has been unbearable. Not only has he received e-mails defamatory to Islam, but his prayer rug has been vandalized, with cut-out letters spelling "sand-nigger" glued to its surface. The consultant is among thousands of American Muslims and Arabs who have experienced religious harassment at work since the terrorist attacks in the U.S. In fact, complaints about religious discrimination to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission jumped more than 20% in 2002, driven primarily from Muslim employees...The religious discrimination has affected employees of other faiths and races.
