Zambia: ZCTU Bemoans Rise in Child Labour

Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has bemoaned the high levels of child labour in the country...ZCTU secretary general Roy Mwaba said child labour usually deprived young people of opportunities in education, and that the labour movement had decided to join stakeholders in fighting the vice...He said child labour was more prevalent in agriculture, construction and quarrying in Zambia. Mr Mwaba called on labour leaders to get involved so that networking with other key stakeholders could be enhanced...ILO senior specialist in workers' activities, Inviolata Chinyangarara said the fight against child labour was a responsibility of everyone. Ms Chinyangarara said child labour could impede children's access to education, skills and limit their possibilities of economic and social mobility later in life.
