Ecuador: Judge Overturns Order To End Evidence Period

The president of Ecuador's provincial Court of Sucumbios, Nicolas Zambrano, has overturned a Sept. 17 order issued by his predecessor that sought to end the time allowed for presentation of evidence in the long-running lawsuit against Chevron Corp. in Ecuador over alleged rain-forest pollution…Chevron, which inherited the lawsuit when it bought Texaco in 2001, is accused of having used out-of-date technology that led to rain-forest and river pollution, causing environmental damage and personal injuries in Ecuador. Chevron has denied the accusations and said the evidence submitted to the court demonstrates that Texaco adequately cleaned up after its activities in Ecuador and that the company met requirements approved by the Ecuadorian government and state-oil company Petroecuador.
