Communication Officer at Office of the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner
The creation of the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner role is one of the key provisions of the Modern Slavery Act, which received Royal Assent in March 2015. The Commissioner has been appointed to spearhead the UK’s fight against modern slavery, with a concerted focus on strengthening law enforcement efforts in the UK and internationally, ensuring that public authorities identify and support victims effectively and working to improve efforts to prevent modern slavery crimes from ever occurring in the first place.
The Commissioner is looking for dynamic and motivated individuals to support delivery of his priorities. In view of this an opportunity has presented itself for the right candidate to join the Commissioner’s team to take up the post of Communications Officer.

Applicants should note that whilst this role is being advertised via the Home Office and the appointment will be on Home Office Terms and Conditions, the Office of the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner is independent from the Home Office.
This role involves working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment alongside a small team in the Commissioner’s office. It will involve regular contact with the Commissioner and other senior stakeholders, and the development of working relationships with contacts from across and outside government.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on an important issue that has quickly risen up national and international political agendas. You will be supporting a Commissioner who in his first period in the role has regularly featured in international, national and regional media, which includes regular live interviews on BBC News and Radio; being accompanied by an ITN media crew to cover his work and engagement in Nigeria; and coverage and op-eds in The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Mail, Reuters, etc.
As Communications Officer you will play a key role in building on this positive start and ensuring that both the Commissioner’s profile and communication of key issues and progress continues to increase. This is on an Information Officer pay grade.
Key responsibilities include:
Promoting the Commissioner’s work and key progress. This will require the post holder to develop a good working understanding of key issues that the Commissioner is engaging on and to have a strong attention to detail.
• Lead on development of proactive communications and media strategy.
• Organise interviews and develop press notices, media responses, media plans and proactive press releases.
• Monitor developments in the anti-slavery field and identify opportunities for appropriate engagement.
• Lead on communications and engagement with statutory and non-statutory stakeholders, in the UK and internationally.
• Work to build the Commissioner’s digital and online media profile, including development and continuing proactive management of website and Twitter account, ensuring all communication is accurate and appropriate and aligned to the Commissioner’s strategic objectives.
• Lead on development of the Commissioner’s ‘brand’ and associated materials.
• Provide responses to correspondence and enquiries sent to the Commissioner from a broad range of stakeholders to a tight deadline.
• Ensure communication objectives are consistently aligned to organisational objectives, ensuring all communication and stakeholder engagement activities directly underpins the delivery of the Commissioner’s strategic objectives.
• Support preparation and follow-up for IASC events and visits.
• May be required to develop specialist knowledge in certain policy areas, as required by the Commissioner.
• Proven experience of developing and implementing high quality communication strategies.
• Experience of generating coverage in a wide range of high profile media outlets.
• First-rate media handling skills. You will be equally effective at spotting proactive media opportunities.
• Experience and evidence of using social media effectively as part of media handling plans.
• Experience of building positive and productive relationships and networks externally and internally with stakeholders, partners and colleagues.
• First class influencing and relationship-building ability.
• Strong analytical skills, plus excellent written and oral communications skills reflecting the need to explain complex policy areas to non-specialist audiences in a clear and engaging way.
• You will need excellent organisational skills and be able to shape and deliver communication strategies.
• You will need to demonstrate determination, resilience and an ability to work under pressure, at pace.
• You will be an enthusiastic team player with a can-do attitude offering creative solutions to problems and driving the media agenda.
• A good understanding of how Government and wider agencies work.
• Willingness to travel nationally and occasionally internationally.
