Myanmar Foreign Investment Project
As Myanmar began emerging from decades of authoritarian rule, economic sanctions and systemic human rights abuses, new foreign investment presented opportunities to advance human rights through the linkage of investment to responsible policies and practices. This project seeks to provide a public database of major foreign companies investing or operating in Myanmar and provide an open record of their human rights commitments.
Starting 2014, we reached out to 118 companies from various sectors and regions, of which 66 have sent us a response or indicated they are preparing one (56% response rate). The record of responses and non-responses is available here. We will continually update this database with further responses. We welcome updates and voluntary submissions from companies.

We are currently tracking companies involved in the special economic zones (SEZs) in Dawei, Kyaukphyu, and Thilawa.
Local groups in Myanmar have conveyed the need for greater transparency among foreign companies investing in SEZs. The availability of relevant information about these companies is key to ensuring meaningful participation by communities in projects affecting them, and to allowing effective dialogue among companies, the government, and affected communities. We are thus creating a dedicated section on SEZs under the Myanmar Foreign Investment Tracking Project.
We have started reaching out to the SEZ companies and will be posting responses on this page as they become available.
International apparel brands
We are also in the process of producing a briefing paper on transparency, wages, and freedom of association in Myanmar’s garment industry supply chains. We plan to present this briefing paper to international apparel brands known to be sourcing from Myanmar, with the goals of presenting our findings and urging them to use their leverage to address abuses in their supply chains. We will also urge the brands to publicly disclose their Myanmar suppliers, as an important step towards heightened accountability among factories and brands.
We will publish the briefing, along with responses and non-responses from the brands approached in the first half of 2017.
